Every day, while my friends and I played out in the front of the school grounds, there would be an old grandma in front of her house across the street rocking back and forth on her creaky little rocking chair. She didn’t ever really do anything, except look up at us and smile, and then look back down. Even so, she was the center of the entire fourth grade’s rumors.
“Did you see that?” Arin said, grabbing my shoulder to catch my attention. He had his finger pointed out across the street at the old woman, who held her head down as she rocked back and forth. “She was watching us again, I swear!”
“No she isn’t” I said. I never really understood what about her spooked people so much; she seemed nice enough, and the way she smiled reminded me a bit of my own grandmother.
“No, I promise!” He said. “See, there! She was watching us again! Didn’t you see?”
